With “The Witcher 3” CD Projekt Red brought the story about Geralt of Riva to a conclusive conclusion. “The Witcher 4” is still longed for by many fans of the sorcerer – but are there any hopes for a release? We clarify the facts.
- “Witcher” universe remains important next to “Cyberpunk”
- New “Witcher” game is supposed to come – but Geralt is not the main character
- When could the release be scheduled?
- You can play these games until then
The good news first: Over the past few months, CD Project Red has repeatedly emphasized that the world of “The Witcher” games still sees much potential for new stories. So “The Witcher 4” is possible – theoretically. The bad news: Until the game comes out, it will take a while – and probably it will not be called “The Witcher 4”, nor will Geralt bring Riva as a game character.
“Witcher” universe remains important next to “Cyberpunk”
Currently, the Polish studio is quite busy with the production of “Cyberpunk 2077”. The fact that some developers are working on a new “Witcher” title behind closed doors can not be ruled out. But there are no official indications.
In July 2018, the developers said that the “Witcher” universe was one of two brands to focus on in the future. Presumably, this statement also refers to the “Witcher” card game “Gwent”, but a larger title is thus at least in the range of the possible.
Instead of magic and monsters, CD Projekt Red is currently busy with carts and creaks.
New “Witcher” game is supposed to come – but Geralt is not the main character
However, CD Projekt Red leaves little doubt that Geralt is told about Riva’s story. The “Witcher” trilogy is over, a part 4 in the sense of a direct continuation will therefore not exist. The main character in a possible other “Witcher” game would therefore almost certainly not be the popular sorcerer – but maybe his foster daughter Ciri? Or somebody else? The possibilities are almost endless and without more precise clues this is all pure speculation.
When could the release be scheduled?
Since the development of a new “Witcher” game is not yet confirmed, there is of course no planned release date. However, there is a date circulating that makes waiting fans quite nervous: In a business report, CD Projekt Red 2018 already announced that another “story-driven AAA role-playing game” is in the works next to “Cyberpunk 2077”, which should be published by 2021 at the latest. In the official forum of the developer this information was again confirmed this year, so that we expect a few months after the “cyberpunk” release in April 2020 with a first trailer.
That this is a “Witcher” title is not confirmed. If you’re hoping for a release of the next installment on PS4 and Xbox One, you’ll probably have to wait in vain – when the game finally pops up, it’s almost certainly only for the next generation of consoles. But after all there is hope at all!
You can play these games until then
“Assassin’s Creed Odyssey” employs you for as long as “The Witcher 3”.
It does not necessarily have to be “The Witcher 4”? You’re just looking for a spiky story-focused role-playing game in which you can sink hundreds of hours of play? Then try these titles!
- “The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim”
- “Dragon Age” series
- “Mass Effect” series
- “Assassin’s Creed Origins”
- “Assassin’s Creed Odyssey”
- “Horizon Zero Dawn”
- CD Projekt Red wants to continue to release games from the “Witcher” universe.
- A “The Witcher 4” in the sense of a sequel, but it will probably not be: The story of Geralt of Riva is completed after the previously published three parts and the associated DLCs.
- For 2021, a previously unknown AAA game by CD Projekt Red is announced. It could be a “Witcher” game, but it is not.
